D'Overbroeck's is a fully co-educational residential and day college in Oxford offering a distinctive education for young people from age 13 through to the Sixth Form. It provides a unique opportunity to study in a lively atmosphere, which is supportive and academically ambitious but less institutionalised than a traditional public school. The College's approach is characterised by small classes, of 5-6 students on average, with the option of individual tuition where it is deemed necessary. There is a strong sense of individual needs and personal attention; and an unusual degree of flexibility in the range and possible combinations of subjects which may be studied. The teaching is highly interactive and seeks to generate an enthusiasm for the subject and effective working habits - while at the same time providing a thorough preparation for public examinations. Students speak readily of the excellence of the teaching, the refreshing rapport they enjoy with their teachers and of an environment which is positive, lively and profoundly motivating.
All students at the College have their own Director of Studies who co-ordinates their academic programme and who is responsible for their overall welfare. The Directors of Studies also keep in regular contact with parents who are kept well informed about their son and daughter's progress. The overwhelming majority of students go on to higher education and each student receives expert advice and guidance on an individual basis throughout the application process.
Extra curricular events and sports are regularly organised by the College. Activities include rowing, fencing, rugby, basketball, football, tennis, squash, fitness training, aerobics and cricket as well as various groups and clubs such as chess, bridge, film, drama, juggling, music and computers. All students are encouraged to participate in these activities on a voluntary basis. In the Sixth Form students also benefit from the many social and cultural activities which Oxford offers.
Accommodation takes many different forms which may include college houses and study bedrooms in family homes. All of the accommodation is in close proximity to the college and in this, as in all areas of College life, flexibility and individual choice are regarded as important. Excellent facilities include a newly refurbished science block, art studios and private study rooms.
A number of academic scholarships are available to students joining the sixth form.
